#ZionsvilleIN – Zionsville was named the safest small town in America in a recent blog post by Movoto Real Estate which factored in crime rate to determine the rankings of small towns across the U.S.
U.S. towns with populations between 5,000 and 25,000 people were considered for America’s safest small town.
How Movoto came to this conclusion was by gathering data on small towns from the 2012 FBI Uniform Crime Report in regards to types of crime such as murder, rape, assault, and theft. Any town that didn’t report data wasn’t in considered for Movoto’s list.
From there Movoto placed types of crimes into four different categories: murders, violent crimes, property crimes and total crimes.
The towns which reported data for crimes then had its crime rates calculated per 100,000 residents so that each town could be fairly compared against each other. The result was a rankings list of 164 small towns in America.
Certain crimes are more severe than others and because of that Movoto weighted some of the categories more heavily with that in mind which results in a more accurate list.
Movoto points out that in 2012 Zionsville reported no murders, assaults, rapes, or robberies reported. When considering Movoto’s calculated findings Zionsville had 42 burglaries, 147 thefts and four vehicle thefts per 100,000 people.
According to Movoto this means that any particular resident has a 1 in 518 chance in becoming a victim of a crime.
Hillsborough, CA came in second on Motovo’s list and Trophy Club, TX placed thrid.
Movoto also named Zionsville the safest city in Indiana, the city of Carmel came in second and Fishers finished as the third safest city in Indiana.
