Zion Nature Center: Bringing Nature Within Reach

The Zion Nature Center is the result of a coming-together of two powerful forces in Zionsville, Indiana, the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Board and a group of volunteers calling themselves the Friends of Zion Nature Center. Together these two organizations brought to life the Zion Nature Center in 2001, for the express purpose of “bringing the experience of nature within reach” for the lucky adults and children of Zionsville. It has become a major source of pride for the city and a well-known thing to do in Zionsville for all ages.

Since its inception, the Zion Nature Center (ZNC) has attracted many groups to its noble cause, including the Zionsville Kiwanis Club, the Boone County Community Foundation, the Village Garden Club, Kappa Kappa Kappa of Zionsville, INPAWS, Eagle Elementary PTO, Boone REMC, and many Zionsville businesses and individuals from the private sector.

This wonderful Zionsville attraction has flourished during its youth. Take a look at the exhibits offered in this special place:

Zion Nature Center Facilities

Animal Room – In this space live snakes, amphibians and turtles adopted by the ZNC, as well as many creatures of the sea in a big marine aquarium.

Craft Room – A popular space where kids of all ages can dabble in nature crafts. Some of the craft projects are free.

Library – Overstuffed chairs invite each guest to pick up a book or magazine and explore in comfort. There are lots of informative materials here.

Preschool Room – One of the most popular facilities at the Zion Nature Center, especially with the tots. Puppets, puzzles and dress-up costumes are all available for their play, and all encourage a love of nature.

Program Room – This is Zion Nature Center’s party room, available for rent at a nominal fee. Rental of this space includes a half-hour live animal program for the enjoyment and edification of your small human creatures.

Wildlife Viewing Area – As you watch through ZNC’s windows, various indigenous wildlife will visit you, from hummingbirds to chickadees. You’ll also find some nice taxidermy and photo collections here.

Zion Nature Center offers ongoing special events and nature programs. Much creative energy goes into the production of these tantalizing programs. A mere sampling would include the Pumpkin Smashing event, in which participants bring and smash their old pumpkins, enhance the Center’s compost pile and reduce landfill waste, all in, well, several fell blows.

More goes on with each passing year at the Zion Nature Center in this active Indianapolis suburb, which should be sprouting naturalists from Central Indiana for many generations to come.
