Lafayette, Indiana

Located less than one hour north of Zionsville, Indiana, Lafayette is a great day trip destination. As the home of Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana offers tons of fun things to do. With three main districts, all filled with fine shopping, dining and attractions, it would be easy to spend a day (or a whole weekend in Lafayette or West Lafayette, Indiana. Downtown Lafayette has great art galleries, museums, nightlife, theaters and more. Spanning from Purdue Memorial Union over the Wabash River and all the way to 11th Street in Lafayette, this is fun day trip destination.

Also in Lafayette is the Wabash Riverfront, a middle district bridging the gap between the Arts and Market district and Chauncey Village. The Wabash Riverfront offers beautiful views of the scenic Wabash River in addition to some of the major attractions of Lafayette including the John Myers Pedestrian Bridge, Riehle Plaza, Tapawingo Park, Wabash Landing and the Tippecanoe County Courthouse. This historic portion of Lafayette offers a glimpse into the city’s origin and history.

Chauncey Village is the west district of Lafayette. It has unique offerings as a near campus location. This is a historic part of Purdue University student and alumni life. It’s name comes from the original settlement in the area founded in 1866. With an emphasis on the traditions of Purdue students and alumni, Purdue memorabilia, great night life, shopping restaurants and more, Chauncey Village caters to visitors at Purdue University. As the “college” part of town, Chauncey Village offers a fun and youthful atmosphere.

The last district of Lafayette is the Arts and Market district. This district lays on the east side of the city and features historic architecture, character, unique shops and a vibrant arts community. A great place to shop, the quaint stores in this section of town reflect the bohemian and artistic community in Lafayette. With plenty of museums and galleries to check out, you might just find the perfect piece of living room art. Plus, from May to October, this district is home to the famous Lafayette Farmers Market open three days a week.

Peru, Indiana

Peru, Indiana is less than two hours due north of Zionsville, Indiana, and is home to one of the most unique Indiana attractions: the International Circus Hall of Fame. Housed in the old circus winter quarters of Peru, Indiana, the International Circus Hall of Fame is a zany museum of Circus history. Traveling circuses of the past would use the Hall of Fame quarters as winter storage and home until they began a new season each spring. As one of the fifty five National Historic Landmarks of the State of Indiana, the International Circus Hall of Fame memorializes “Circus Greats” through colorful posters, wagons, models and exhibits.

Open May 1st through October 31, the International Circus Hall of Fame boasts a miniature replica of the 1934 Hagenbeck Wallace Circus complete with all the animals, performers and even the Circus parade. Plus a performance season from July 17 to August 1st that attracts the best of the best professional circus stars from around the world. The International Circus Hall of Fame is a living museum of Circus history and a great day trip destination for families with Zionsville kids.
